Readiness for Practice among Senior Nursing Students in South Korea: A Cross-sectional Study

Purpose
Nursing students are future healthcare workers responsible for maintaining public health. Owing to the increase in early resignation among new nurses, nursing education outcomes must be evaluated by investigating students' practice readiness.
Methods
Using convenience sampling, we recruited fourth-year students from two nursing colleges to participate in a cross-sectional online survey in November 2023. The Casey-Fink Readiness for Practice Survey was used to assess practice readiness and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and ANOVA.
Results
Among the 157 participants (female, 77.7%; mean age, 23.12±1.93 yrs), the overall practice readiness score was 63.53±8.30 (range: 20~80) and the mean subscale score was 23.14±3.73 for clinical problem-solving (range: 7~28), 6.69±1.25 for learning techniques (range: 2~8), 16.87±2.46 for professional identity (range: 5~20), and 16.82±3.46 for trials and tribulations (range: 6~24). Practice readiness did not differ significantly by gender or age and was greater among subgroups with high grades and satisfaction with the major, classroom practice, simulation practice, clinical practice, and lectures.
Conclusion
Universities must improve the quality of classes and practical education to enhance fourth-year nursing students’ practice readiness. Nursing education programs incorporating problem-based learning must be developed and evaluated to strengthen students’ clinical inference and critical-thinking skills.

Second-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing: Current Status and Key Challenges and Future Directions

Purpose
This study examines the current status of a second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in South Korea, identifies its advantages and limitations, and provides future directions for improving the program.
Methods
A mixed-methods, sequential explanatory design was employed. A cross-sectional survey (n=28 faculty members, 122 enrolled students, 20 graduates) was conducted, followed by focus group interviews (n=six faculty members, 13 enrolled students, six graduates).
Results
Among the 28 nursing colleges, 19 had a second-degree BSN program enrollment capacity of less than 10% of their total student capacity, whereas six colleges had a capacity ranging from 20% to 30%. The advantages of the program included producing nurses with diverse backgrounds, demonstrating a strong aspiration for the nursing profession, diligent attitude, and mature interpersonal skills among the second-degree BSN students. The limitations included inadequate support and resources for program operations, difficulties in ensuring the quality of classes and clinical practice, and limited opportunities for interaction with other students.
Conclusion
This study highlights the importance of establishing clear policies and guidelines for such programs and developing standardized curricula to ensure high-quality nursing education while accommodating an increasing number of students.

The Current Status of Nursing Management Practicum during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Purpose
This study was to identify how a nursing management practicum was operated during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. Methods: This study surveyed instructors teaching the nursing management practicum with a questionnaire covering five domains and 42 items. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results: The practicum was performed mainly by mixed methods (40.8% and 38.5%), in hospitals only (30.8% and 60.4%), online only (19.8% and 1.1%) in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The mixed methods were most frequently used for instructor teaching and conferences (43.9% and 58.3%). and the average teaching time per week was 9.40 and 8.69 hours per week, respectively. Taking charge in one to three core nursing skill items, 87.8% and 90.1% of the respondents each year performed face to face evaluation for the skills. Four to six out of 12 POs were covered by 58.2% and 54.9% of the participants, respectively, in 2020 and 2021. The greatest difficulty under the pandemic was securing students’ hospital assignments. Conclusion: The nursing management practicum needs to adopt various digital technologies, and create new education models including hybrid ones combining both contact and untact methods to improve the educational effect for the post COVID-19 era.

Examining Students’ Experience with the Nursing Management Practicum Based on the Service Design

Purpose
This study aimed to identify nursing students’ experience with the Nursing Management Practicum based on the service design concept to provide a basis for an ideal subject design. Methods: This study was a qualitative research that analyzed the experience of students and their clinical instructors based on the blueprint of Nursing Management Practicum. Focus group interviews were conducted with 13 graduates from two nursing schools and 11 clinical instructors from three hospitals. Results: The students went through six stages during the practicum. They met clinical instructors during the ward orientation and learning activities in wards and met school instructors during the general orientation and conference. The students perceived the learning activities and teaching from the clinical instructors in wards as the most important practicum factors. Conclusion: This study provided information which helped us to understand nursing students’ experience with the Nursing Management Practicum as the time passed by. This information can be used to improve students’ experience with the practicum and convert the subject into a more learner-centered education.

A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Nursing Ethics Education for Undergraduate Nursing Students and Nurses

Purpose
This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify trends in nursing ethics education research for Korean nursing students and nurses. Methods: The data search was conducted in July 2020; domestic and foreign academic journals were targeted for the search. A combination of search terms was entered into major databases, and the year of publishing was limited to the last 10 years (2010~2020). Results: The systematic review analyzed 25 experimental and 13 non-experimental studies, and education methods included lectures, discussions, role play, film-use classes related to nursing ethics, action learning, and case-based learning. The meta-analysis of 12 studies revealed that ethical education has significant differences in effect size of biomedical ethics, critical thinking, moral judgment, and moral sensitivity. A subgroup analysis of education methods showed that in addition to traditional lecture and discussion education methods, there were significant differences in the effect size of sense of biomedical ethics between the following two methods: lecture and discussion including additional methods and lecture and discussion only. Conclusion: Ethics education for nursing students and nurses has been found to be effective in improving ethics-related competencies, and various teaching methods other than lectures and discussions must be utilized.

Development and Evaluation of an Informatics System for Nursing Faculty to Improve Patient Safety Teaching Competency

Purpose
This study aimed to develop an educational informatics system for nursing faculty to improve their competencies in teaching patient safety and to evaluate the effectiveness of the system. Methods: We developed a system called, ‘Resource to Enhance Safety Competency and Utilize for Education’ (RESCUE) based on the World Health Organization Multi-professional Patient Safety Curriculum Guide, and it was implemented with full-time nursing faculty in 4-year nursing schools. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used for evaluation. A total of 46 nursing faculty members used the system during a 3-month period. The effects of the RESCUE were measured using a survey including patient safety teaching competency, system usability and user satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: After using the RESCUE, participants showed a significant increase in self-confidence in teaching patient safety during lectures (Z=-3.61, p<.001) and practica (Z=-3.14, p=.002). Conclusion: The developed informatics system was shown to be effective in improving the self-confidence of nursing faculty in teaching patient safety. To effectively integrate patient safety topics into the curriculum, it can be helpful to utilize the educational materials provided in this study with various clinical cases.

Experience of Nursing Management Practice in Graduate Nurses

PURPOSE
The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate nursing students' experience during nursing management practicum.
METHODS
Data were collected from 10 in-depth interviews. The main question was “Could you describe your experience during the nursing management practicum?” The qualitative data from the field notes and transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi's method.
RESULTS
The experiential themes of students' experience during a nursing management practicum were ‘differentiate clinical practice which is immersed in the nursing management process’, ‘understand nurse managers’ leadership qualities and influence of communication', ‘understand why the general nurse engages in management tasks on duty’, ‘gain insight into organizational operations from new and diverse perspectives’, ‘engage in nursing practice through abundant interaction’.
CONCLUSION
The results show that the nursing management practicum focuses on the management of nurses and nurse manager, so instruction and guidance by professors and practicing leaders is needed for students to practice these goals, In addition, in the clinical practice field, students should be provided with a practical environment and guidance in accordance with the goal of management practice.

Analysis of Knowledge in Nursing Management Educational Objectives based on Anderson's Revision of Bloom's Taxonomy

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to analyze the Nursing management educational objectives and nurse duties required to be achieved in the nursing management curriculum in nursing job analysis.
METHODS
Nursing management educational objectives and knowledge to be achieved in a nursing management curriculum in nursing job analysis were analyzed using Anderson's Revision of Bloom's taxonomy of Educational Objectives.
RESULTS
The analysis showed that 172 (59.3%) of the 290 educational objectives of the nursing management corresponded to ‘conceptual knowledge’ and 167 (57.6%) of the ‘cognitive process dimension’ were ‘understanding’. In the job analysis, 29 out of 57 (50.9%) were procedural knowledge. The finding indicates that ‘health promotion and maintenance’ duty was excluded from the job analysis, but included in the nursing management curriculum and objectives.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study contribute to the foundation of nursing management as a practical study by analyzing the goal of nursing management learning in connection with the job analysis required in the field.

Reflection-related Research in Korean Nursing: A Literature Review

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to analyze research on reflection in Korean nursing, and suggest future directions for effective application of reflective practice in Korean nursing education and practice.
METHODS
A review was performed using domestic databases including RISS, KISS, DBpia, and NDSL. Twenty-three papers were analyzed according to general characteristics, key variables regarding reflection, and findings regarding reflection.
RESULTS
Reflection in nursing research has received attention since 2005, generating almost half the publications in the last 3 years. Key variables regarding reflection were classified into reflection-related general term (34.7%), reflective action (8.6%), and reflection writing method (56.7%). Findings regarding reflection were categorized into correlation of reflection with other variables (26.1%), learning evaluation using a reflective journal (22.2%), effects of applying reflection as an intervention (47.4%), and Korean Self-Reflection and Insight Scale validation (4.3%).
CONCLUSION
Results indicate that reflection or reflective practice is an important component in integrating theories to practice, and that reflective practice is a prerequisite to becoming a professional nurse as well as a crucial tool for ideal changes in nursing. Considerable effort should be made to define the concept of reflective practice and effectively apply it to nursing education and practice in Korea.

A Survey on Nurses' Perception, Satisfaction, and Needs related to Continuing Education

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to investigate perception, satisfaction and needs for continuing education for nurses in Korea.
METHODS
Participants were selected 1,106 using disproportional stratified sampling for the 110,601 members of the 10 affiliated organizations of the Korean Nurses Association and 873 nurses participated in the online survey. Data were collected from February 2 to 27, 2015, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Scheffé test were conducted.
RESULTS
The perception of continuing education averaged 0.69 on a scale of 1, satisfaction with continuing education was 3.66 out of 5, and need for continuing education was 4.33 out of 6. Perception, satisfaction and needs for continuing education showed significant differences depending on age, marriage, education, work department, type of work and clinical career, while perception and satisfaction differed more among type of institution and the affiliated groups.
CONCLUSION
For the development of continuing education for nurses, it is necessary to establish an integrated information system for nurse continuing education and to develop various education programs for career development.

Developing and Evaluating a Camp-style Leadership Enhancement Program for Nursing Students

PURPOSE
The aim of this study was to develop a camp-style leadership enhancement program (CLEP) and evaluate its effects to provide basic data for developing such programs for nursing students.
METHODS
The study design was a randomized control pre/post-test. There were 35 participants each in the experimental and control groups for a total of 70 participants. The content and structure of the CLEP reflected 13 core concepts extracted using a systematic literature review. The program included a two-day camp-style program with eight modules consisting of lectures, individual and team activities, group discussions, team presentations, and feedback from the lecturer. The impacts of CLEP were measured using self, transformational, and servant leadership.
RESULTS
Pre-homogeneity between the group participants' general and leadership characteristics was confirmed. After the CLEP, the experimental group showed a significant increase in self, transformational, and servant leadership.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that universities utilize the performance-based self-learning CLEP to increase leadership among nursing students.

A Literature Review of Research on Action Learning-based Nursing Education in South Korea

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify trends of action learning based nursing education research from 2006 to 2016 and suggest directions for advancing action learning based nursing education.
METHODS
A review was made of 18 studies in nursing education reported in domestic journals. RISS 4U, KISS, DBpia, NDSL databases were searched using analysis criteria developed by the researchers. General and methodological characteristics and outcomes of action learning based nursing education were analyzed.
RESULTS
Of 18 papers, in 14 (77.8%) quantitative design was used, 16 (88.9%) were conducted in university settings, and virtual problem approach was used in 13 studies (72.2%). Writing task description was conducted in 8 studies (44.4%). Norminal group technique and logic tree were used in 6 studies (33.3%). The number of team members was 6–8 in 10 (55.6%) studies. Reflection journaling was used in 16 (88.9%) studies. Action learning was effective in improving core competency of nurses and nursing students such as problem solving ability and communication skill.
CONCLUSION
Findings indicate that action learning is a useful teaching method in nursing education even though action learning for nurses has not been actively applied. Therefore strategies to activate action learning for nurses are needed.

Experience of Incivility to Nursing Students during Clinical Practice

PURPOSE
The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate nursing students' experience of incivility during clinical practice.
METHODS
Data were collected from 11 in-depth interviews. The main question was “Could you describe your experience of incivility during clinical practice?” The qualitative data from the field notes and transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi's method.
RESULTS
The experiential themes of incivility to nursing students during clinical practice were ‘exposure to verbal abuse’, ‘receiving unjust reproaches’, ‘treated as an insignificant person’, ‘excluded from nursing as a bothersome person’, and imidated in an unfamiliar atmosphere'.
CONCLUSION
Nursing students experienced incivility in many ways and from a variety of sources, such as nursing staff, patients, patients' families, and other employees during clinical practice as part of the 3rd and 4th year curriculum. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a safer environment for clinical practice. Also finding solutions to these incivility problems should lead to improvement in students' clinical practice.

A Study on Evaluation System for Nursing Bachelor Degree Program Outcomes: Focus on Improvement in Nursing Leadership Ability

PURPOSE
This study was conducted to develop a nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system, required for accreditation of nursing education.
METHODS
A methodological design was used. To ensure the theoretical validity of the evaluation system, learning objectives for nursing education programs and job descriptions for nurses in Korea were verified by analyzing the relationships in the five attributes of the nursing leadership concept. The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was developed based on the Kim & Park's developmental model (2008).
RESULTS
The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was established, including implementation level, education curriculum, level of performance, evaluation method, rubrics, and Close-the-Loop.
CONCLUSION
The developed evaluation system can be actively used in nursing education, and contribute to enhancing the leadership competencies of nursing students and graduate nurses.

Effects of Clinical Learning Environment on Clinical Practice Stress and Anxiety in Nursing Students

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify factors in the clinical learning environment that affect clinical practice stress and anxiety in nursing students.
METHODS
Participants were 210 senior nursing students from two universities who had completed their clinical experience. Data were collected from self-report questionnaires and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 Program.
RESULTS
The mean scores for the clinical learning environment, the clinical practice stress, and anxiety were 3.16+/-0.68, 2.98+/-0.66, and 43.74+/-10.18 points, respectively. The regression analysis showed that the clinical learning environment contributed to 13% of the stress and 20% of the anxiety in the nursing students with the conditions controlled for general characteristics, department satisfaction and social support.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study suggest that the clinical learning environment should be carefully assessed to reduce nursing students' stress and anxiety from clinical practice. Therefore, collaboration between nursing universities and teaching hospitals is necessary to optimize clinical learning environment.

Experiences of Ethical Issues and Needs for Ethics Education in Clinical Nurses

PURPOSE
This study was done to identify the experiences of ethical issues and needs for ethics education in clinical nurses.
METHODS
A cross-sectional survey was used and data were collected in 2013. Participants were 428 clinical nurses working in the general units of seven medical hospitals. The Ethical Issues in Clinical Practice Tool was used. Data analysis was performed using SPSS/WIN 19.0.
RESULTS
'Providing care with a possible risk to your health' was the most frequent and disturbing ethical problems for nurses. The highest helpful ethical topic was 'the patients' right, autonomy and informed consent'. The ethical issue experience was significantly different according to education level, work units, and type of employment. The necessity of ethics education was statistically different according to age, religion, level of education, duration of working as RN, position, shift type, and continuing education about nursing ethics.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study show that nursing educators need to provide practical ethics education based on frequent ethical issues and helpful education topics. These findings can be used in developing effective education strategies for clinical nurses and nursing organizations to improve nurses' ethical decision-making abilities.

A Study on Assessment System for Nursing Bachelor Degree Program Outcomes: Focused on Communication Ability Improvement

PURPOSE
The core of accreditation for nursing education is to improve the ability and quality of graduates through a CQI system based on outcomes. For program outcomes of nursing education accreditation criterion, it is necessary to understand the relationship among education assessment, objective and curriculum.
METHODS
The focus of this study was on program outcomes and the assessment. First measures for improving the general problems of program outcomes associated with the assessment system were stated. Detailed measure for practicing program outcomes, the assessment system and the assessment tool using Rubrics were discussed.
RESULTS
Detailed measure were established for practicing the program outcomes, assessment system and assessment tool, which makes use of rubrics, program outcome No 3 of the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education.
CONCLUSION
Therefore it is expected that the assessment system established in this study will allow universities to conduct program outcomes and assessment.

Issues and Challenges of Nurse Workforce Policy: A Critical Review and Implication

PURPOSE
In this paper issues and challenges of the workforce policy for nursing were explored and appropriate policy responses identified.
RESULTS
Many countries, including South Korea, are facing a shortage of nurses. In South Korea, the number of practicing registered nurses is about half the average for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member countries. The shortage of nurses is not necessarily a shortage of individuals with nursing qualifications but also includes complex issues, such as lack of well-educated nurses, shortage of nurses willing to work, and geographical imbalances of nurses. The present nurse workforce policies are to increase number of nursing schools, to reduce the length of training, and to replace nurses with nursing assistants. However, the findings of many studies have shown that these attempts resulted in a worsening of patient outcomes and increasingly low quality of care.
CONCLUSION
The findings in this study indicate that nurse workforce policy should have a multi-faceted approach in order to address the many factors affecting nurse shortages.

Changes in Nursing Students' Moral Judgment and Ways to Evaluate the Effect of Ethics Education

PURPOSE
This study was done to investigate changes in nursing students' moral judgment throughout their professional education, and to identify more suitable ways to evaluate ethics education by using P (%) scores only and P (%) scores with 4th scores.
METHODS
The study consisted of cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys as well as a study using a nonequivalent control group pre-post experimental design. The participants were nursing students attending a university in Gyeongju, Korea. The data were collected from September 1, 2006 to October 31, 2009 using the Korean version of the Defining Issues Test.
RESULTS
In the cross-sectional survey, there was no significant difference in the nursing students' moral judgment scores according to their school grades. In the longitudinal survey, nursing students' moral judgment scores did not change significantly over the duration of their education. In the nonequivalent control group study, the effectiveness of nursing ethics education was identified by P (%) scores only.
CONCLUSION
The evidence indicates that nursing professional education does not influence the development of nursing students' moral judgment, and using P (%) scores only seems to be a better way compared to other ways to evaluate the effects of nursing ethics education.

PURPOSE
This practice study was done to describe the process and outcomes of application of Evidence Based Nursing (EBN) Education to nursing management clinical practicum and suggest strategies to diffuse EBN into nursing management education.
METHODS
Education on the evidence based nursing management process was provided to 65 senior nursing students from a university. Nursing management clinical practicum integrated with EBN. The setting was a five full day-clinical practicum. Group and individual training on EBN process with lectures, small group discussions, conferences, and educational prescription were provided. Outcomes were analyzed using paired t test for 65 participants.
RESULTS
Evidence based nursing competency increased significantly showing improvement in understanding EBN, formulating clinical question, searching & classifying the evidence, recognizing level of evidence, considering patient preference, and evaluating outcomes. Nursing students' access and use of evidence based information resource also improved.
CONCLUSION
The results of this study indicate that the application of EBN to nursing management clinical practicum is effective to improve EBN competency in undergraduate students and should be further applied in nursing education using the systematic strategies.

Nursing Core Competencies Needed in the Fields of Nursing Practice for Graduates in Nursing

PURPOSE
This study was done to provide information on issues of nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing, from the perspective of nursing managers, and to make suggestion for improving nursing education programs.
METHODS
Ten nursing managers participated in this study. They were in charge of clinical nursing education in the fields of nursing practice. Data were collected using focus group interviews and analyzed with the content analysis methodology of Downe - Wamboldt's.
RESULTS
Six types of nursing core competency - therapeutic nursing competency, professional nursing competency, administrative nursing competency, humanistic nursing competency, relational nursing competency, and personal nursing competency - were identified as nursing core competencies needed in the fields of nursing practice for graduates in nursing.
CONCLUSION
Results of the study show important evidence for decision-making about nursing curriculum revision based on nursing core competency, both in the classroom and in nursing practice areas. These results should contribute to the development of evaluation indicators for nursing students or new nurses. Further research is required to measure degree of nursing core competency in graduates of nursing and to identify the effect of competency-based education for improving nursing core competency.

An Oral History Study of Nursing Education and Nursing Activity in the Jinju Area from 1940s to 1960s

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to define the experience of nursing education in the Jinju area of Gyeongsang-Namdo from the 1940s to 1960s.
METHODS
An oral history study was done using personal interviews with 8 nurses who graduated in nursing in Gyeong Nam area during the period under study.
RESULTS
In this study, the individual's educational background before entering the nursing school, school life, and life as a nurse after graduating from nursing school were defined.
CONCLUSION
For most of the respondents, their educational background before entering nursing school was middle school. They studied very hard in poor surroundings. After graduation from a nursing school, they worked in hospitals, public health centers, midwifery centers, and schools. Half of the respondents had experience as a midwife. Their income as a midwife was relatively high at that time. They all had positive identities and lived a life devoted to the individual, society, and the nation.

Effects on Knowledge and Performance in Clinical Nursing of Education on Nursing Recording Focusing on Legal Aspects

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on knowledge and performance in clinical nurses who participated in education on nursing recording focusing on the legal aspects.
METHOD
The participants were working in medical departments in one hospital. There were 32 nurses in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. Pre-test was conducted on the two groups before education, and, in order to examine the effects of education, a post-test was conducted after three weeks. For the experimental group, the education on nursing recording focusing on legal aspects was provided as a lecture-led one-to-one training.
RESULTS
Significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups in knowledge (F=15.728, p<.001), and performance (F=42.454, p<.001).
CONCLUSIONS
The results of this study indicate that education on nurse recording enhances the knowledge and performance of the nurses. Thus education on nurse recording focusing on legal aspects should be required in the area of nursing science.

Current Status and Considerations for Education in Nursing Management

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to explore the current status of education for nursing management in Korea.
METHODS
A descriptive study was done using a questionnaire developed by the investigators. The data were collected by survey from 96 out of 129 nursing schools, between December 2010 and February 2011.
RESULTS
For 22.9% of nursing schools, there was no faculty for nursing management. The credits and subjects included in nursing management varied among the nursing schools. Lectures in subjects related to nursing management were given not only by nursing management faculty but also by faculty with other majors. There were more faculty and credits for nursing management courses in 4-year nursing schools than in 3-year schools.
CONCLUSION
To improve the quality of education in nursing management, there is a need to standardized courses and provide nursing faculty who have majored in nursing management.

Study of Abilities Required to Develop for Student in Nursing Education

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify key abilities needed to develop for student nurses.
METHODS
A methodological research design was used in this study. The abilities for student nurses were developed through literature review and educational objectives analysis of 60 nursing colleges in Korea.
RESULTS
Finally, the abilities required to develop for student nurses in higher education were 8 cluster of abilities and 19 abilities such as problem solving ability, relationship ability, professional ability, ability in information processing, globalization, voluntary service.
CONCLUSION
To perceive and achieve abilities for student nurses in higher education has to be needed a systematic approach in setting objectives, to improve curriculum and to develop program and educational methods.

Effects of Task Performance Style in Nursing Management Practicum on Problem-Solving and Nursing Competency according to Communication Ability of Nursing Students

PURPOSE
This study was done to examine effects of task performance style, communication ability and their interaction on problem-solving ability and nursing competency of nursing students participating in a nursing management practicum.
METHODS
The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were 56 fourth year nursing students (25 in the cooperative task group and 31 in the individual task group) and data were collected from March to September 2010. Additionally, two groups were classified based on communication ability of students and four groups were classified by their task performance style and communication ability. Problem-solving ability and nursing competency were measured pre- and post-test and compared between groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 17.0 program.
RESULTS
Neither problem-solving ability and nursing competency were statistically significantly different according to task performance style. Nursing competency was statistically significantly higher in the high communication group compared to the low communication group. Problem-solving ability was significantly different among the four groups classified by task performance style and communication ability.
CONCLUSION
Nursing educators may need to improve students' communication ability to improve nursing competency and also assign different tasks based on communication ability of nursing students to improve problem-solving ability.

Career Ladder System Perceived by Nurses

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate how nurses perceive the Career Ladder System(CLS).
METHODS
This study was a descriptive survey using questionnaires. Questionnaires were developed by an expert group. Participants included 161 nurses working in the Children's Hospital. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, descriptive statistics, chi-square-test and ANCOVA.
RESULTS
This study revealed that nurses who advanced in their career ladders have a significantly higher perception of participation in their professional activities and a general comprehension of the CLS more than the nurses who did not advance in their career ladders. However, nurses who advanced in their career ladders have a significantly lower perception of the expected outcome of the CLS more than nurses who did not.
CONCLUSIONS
This result showed that nurses who had experienced in clinical advancement and recognition were highly motivated with their professional activities via the CLS as well as they considered it to allow professional growth.

Predictors of the Clinical Competence in New Graduate Nurses

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of clinical competence in new graduate nurses.
METHODS
The subjects of this study were 238 nurses at 13 general hospitals who have had less than 12 months of nursing experience. The data were collected by structured questionnaire from August 5 to August 31 of 2009 and analyzed by the SPSS Win 12.0 program.
RESULTS
The total mean score for clinical competence was 181.05+/-15.17, critical thinking disposition was 94.65+/-8.12, and practice environment was 41.00+/-5.55. There were significant differences of clinical competence according to the GPA (t=-3.58, p<.001), the number of beds in the hospital (t=-3.22, p=.001), instruction by preceptor (t=-2.32, p=.021), and previous experience of clinical practice in the hospital (t=-2.21, p=.028). Additionally, critical thinking disposition and practice environment were positively correlated to clinical competence (r=.50, p<.001; r=.20, p=.002). In multivariate approach, predictors included in this study explained 43% of variance in clinical competence. Significant predictors of clinical competence were critical thinking disposition (beta=.50, p<.001), practice environment (beta=.14, p=.012), and working duration (beta=.13, p=.018).
CONCLUSIONS
Based on these findings, it is needed that providing supportive practice environment and developing curriculum for enhancing the critical thinking disposition to improve the clinical competence in new graduate nurses.
